You've probably seen these infamous piece of advertisement before. To advertise the launch of the upcoming Xbox in Japan, we have a visibly edited Bill Gates holding a Japanese controller S in one hand and a big American burger in the other. The metaphorical genius of symbolising the west and east coming together thanks to our old friend Bill. But have you ever wondered where this image came from? Probably not, but I'm going to tell you anyway.
First it's obvious some image doctoring has been done here to the image to make Bill Gates, how do I put this, look more Asian in appearance? His eyes are smaller and the colour of his hands are obvious altered. No idea why this was done because wouldn't it contradict the whole message of the poster?
Anyway, this was part of a series of Xbox ads put in fast food trays (pieces of paper that you put under the food to keep the trays clean) in restaurants nearby the Tokyo Game Show in spring 2001.The three different pieces of text (along with my loose translations) said:
「めずらしいところでお会いしましたね」: "Fancy seeing you here!"
「おいしいのは、どっちでしょう。 。。。ファイナルアンサー?」: "Which one is more delicious? ...Is that your final answer?"
「ごいっしょにフライドポテトとXboxはいかがですか♡」: "How about enjoying some Xbox and french fries together? <3"
